Retired Chief Boatswain’s Mate and navy SEAL Kenneth J. Stethemís honorary frocking of to the rank of master chief petty officer. Steelworker 2nd Class Robert Dean Stethem was killed as he was planning to return home from deployment aboard TWA Flight 847. He was singled out by the Lebanese hijackers because of his military status and was badly beaten and ultimately executed after the terrorists’ demands were not met. Throughout his ordeal, Petty Officer Stethem did not yield; instead he acted with fortitude and courage and helped his fellow passengers to endure by his example.
