On the flight deck of a carrier at night, there's a Two Tailed Tom Kitty (F-14) in zone 5 afterburner on cat 2, the noise is so loud that it blows your pants legs at 90-degrees to the wind. AWESOME on steroids!
It's sad that we'll probably never see it's like again.

(Oh, and as for the 5th generation thing … hey, if you think that PAK FA is cooler than the Tomcat, that's okay … just reflect on the fact that it took Ivan FORTY YEARS to develop something that is still only POTENTIALLY more badass than the Tom. So, yeah. Good for you, Ivan!)

Before the F-22 came out there was always a (earlier it was Mig, later) SU which was better than the Fs.
And even then, F-22 has the highest accident rate of any USAF fighter aircraft currently in service.

Is that really all there is to it beacuse that’d be flabbergasting.
The F-14 was -the- plane that got me interested in aviation, when the F-14 got retired, I wasn't interested anymore – everything else was second. The F-14 had a role that the armed forces haven't even bothered filling when it got retired. If it can be un-retired, then dammit, let's do it. Nothing like the F-14
Only compensation is that the F/A-18 will be retired by the F-35 JSF, and that that is currently a bucket of bolts atm – Cheney is such a huge douche
Lockheed, Douglas, and Boeing make much better fighters. Plus, the f-14 was dated at it's time of service compared to the su-27/29, and yes they're newer. But I'm a big Lockheed fan so I'm biased.
