That Bear is a pretty impressive aircraft. To be still a threat, even if only perceived all these years….
etcrr
#4 #19 I do not understand why send an A-6 intruder as it is a Bomber not a fighter?
interestingly, the Bear has been around for a long time pics show 4 generations of interceptors
Jos
Could be an EA-6, with ECM & Jammers
etcrr
#19 might be the EA-6 has 4 seats the A-6 has two side by side
Troy
No that's an A-6E you can tell by the sensor pod on the bottom of the nose. The EA-6 had a second set of windows and a huge pod on the tail.

Ever think that maybe the pic was taken from the backseat of a 14 ?
Vinny
Actually both are A-6's. The one with the F-18 is a KA-6 (tanker) and the legs of the F-18C would be a good reason for the tanker to join in as well. I once intercepted a Bear in a KA-6, because the alert Tom-kitty went down on the catapult and we were the closest available. In reallity, these were escorts not intercepts per se as there was very little threat of actually engaging the Rusky looky-loos.

The russians are a brave lot just to get in to that old pice of junk! they have to be about 40 years old by now.
fuzzybeard2016
B-52s have been in service for 56 years (all types); your point?

Moving to intercept..

i just find it funny that like 85% of the pictures were US and allies playing sheep dog. "nope sorry, still can't fly here Ivan."

great post

I see some Canadian planes here. If Canada gets the F-35 as planned, we'll have a tough time continuing these patrols and escort missions due to all of their problems. Slower speeds (rated for mach 1.6, but reduced to mach 1.0 due to control problems and paint bubbling), communication issues, possible difficulties related to climate in the Arctic, and the list goes on. It would make more sense to build newer editions of the older designs, such as the F-16 and F-18, until the F-35 is actually ready. Or, better yet, buy a different plane entirely.
survivor686
Agreed. The nice thing however is that we have an open contract, meaning at any point we could walk away from it.
fuzzybeard2016
What about depot upgrades of the CF-16 & CF-18? I agree with you, the F-35 is one of the biggest boondoggles to come down the line in a long time.

Getting to the root of a dffuicilt situation begins with looking for the answer. While may seem hard to comprehend but a lot hard times exist from the premise, not the conclusion.

As said above, the F-15 is still one of the best air superiority fighters in the world. Bested only by our own stuff. The Superhornet is also still more than capable of protecting carrier ops. The F-35 is a political football now. The answer to a question nobody asked……..
Carcaiacus
The F-15 is the best air superiority fighter because he didn't meet the russian conterparts.
stonewall_79
The Israelis use the F-15 and F-16 and they kick ass to any MIG in front of them.

Call it a coincidence, but I've recently started putting many of the British interceptors and various other British jets onto T Shirts! I've made them as 2 colour vector graphics and they look awesome! I would really appreciate it if you guys could take a look and perhaps like the facebook page? Many Thanks Chive nation!

#8 since when did Canada ever have Tornadoes?
Liam Gardner
That's a British Tornado squadron markings.
Jezza67
Yeah, saw that too. WTF? Maybe it's personal insignia on a F3 flown by an exchange pilot. Any answers?
Phred
Throttle guys, it's IntercepTORs not IntercepTERs. Also, notice that on most shots of the Soviet Bear bomber, the rear guns are pointed upwards? This was deliberately done by the flight crews as a sign of non-aggression towards the intercepting aircraft.

Commander: "Yes it is soldier…yes it is…I'm moving in!"

I'll have to look for my Cruise book, But it had a great picture of 2 AH-1 Cobra escorting a Bear. The Bear pilot had to be playing along for the shot, he pass between the cobras at just the right time.
parkatola
What is the plane in #15? (Not the bear.) Interesting looking plane. Thanks!
Liam Gardner
RAF Lightning built by English Electric is was a cold war era interceptor.
Johnny
#24 and #30 have to be really recent if F-22s were intercepting bears…. my question is why would they be flying this close enough to need to be intercepted in the first place in modern times
Andy
Russians started up flying the long missions again for "training purposes." I think they just wanted us to know they still could.
otzi
Notice it's a turbofan and not a jet. Somebody probably lost a bet.

notice how it can still fly fast as hell?
