I want to say it was "R-Type," for the Sega Master System, but I'm not 100% on that.

Thanks but I don't think that is it. the game I have in mind was different fighter gets and plans on earth. the bosses were usually huge bombers and tanks that you had to take down weapon by weapon. I think it was on either nintendo or super nintendo.
