The Belgians are training African pouch rats to locate landmines. They have an incredible sense of smell and are easily motivated by being rewarded with food. To put the impact of this idea to numbers, it takes 2 soldiers a day to clear a 2,150 sq. foot area of mines. In contrast, 2 trained rats can accomplish this in 1.5 hours.

The RQ-7 Shadow unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is used by the United States Army and Marine Corps. Launched from a trailer-mounted pneumatic catapult, it is recovered with the aid of arresting gear similar to jets on an aircraft carrier. Its gimbal-mounted, digitally-stabilized, liquid nitrogen-cooled electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) camera relays video in real time.

It's pretty smart on Russia's end. Save a bunch of money with blow-up decoys. Then again, maybe Russia shouldn't announce to the world that they have decoys.

This is the Lockheed Martin’s AGM-158 JASSM (Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile). It is a semi-stealthy long-range, 2,000 pound missile that has a single vertical tail and is guided by a global positioning system. In the initial testing of the weapon, there were many failed test in which the JASSM did not hit it’s target. However, after further work on the missile, it proved successful in hitting 15 out of 16 targets in testing. This led to the acquisition of 3,700 JASSM’s by the U.S. Air Force but the Navy has decided not to purchase it’s initial planned 450 JASSM’s. As for the Air Force, the JASSM will be carried by a wide range of aircraft, including: the F-15E, F-16, F/A-18, F-35, B-1B, B-2 and B52 are all intended to carry the weapon. theBRIGADE wants to hear your opinion on this future weapon.

“Marines prepare to enter a mock Afghan village setup at Camp Pendleton’s Infantry Immersion Trainer (IIT). The village was used during the Future Immersive Training Environment (FITE) Joint Capability Technology Demonstration at Camp Pendleton, Calif. FITE is a USJFCOM JCTD virtual reality-based training system looking to improve team decision-making skills through realistic scenarios that challenge warfighters to read and react to situations and signals they may encounter on the battlefield.” Or as I would say, it reminds me of Aliens 2.

Berkeley Bionics and Lockheed Martin are developing the Human Universal Load Carrier (HULC) which is pronounced “Hulk”. It will be hydrolic-powered exoskeleton. The system will carry loads up to 200 pounds. Mobility in combat is one of the major concerns to which a soldier can run at 7 mph for an extended amount of time and it has the ability to move at 10 mph in short bursts. The HULC weighs in at 53 pounds and can be packed up in under 30 seconds. So here’s to the future, I need a beer.
